The Varsity Boys Soccer team bested Athens Christian School for the second time this season in another nail-biter that ended 3-2 in 2 overtime periods in Thursday night’s home match. After failing to capitalize on several early goal scoring chances, LCA played from behind the entire game. The Lions were down 0-1 until Isaiah Coriolan equalized the game at 1-1 on a through ball from David Carruth early in the second half. After going down again minutes later, LCA tied 2-2 from a long range shot by Austin McIlroy that found the back of the net. Regulation time ended at 2-2. No score through first OT. In second OT, David Carruth was taken down in the box that resulted in a LCA penalty kick. Just like the first meeting with ACS, Carter Smith was called upon to take the kick and he proceeded to bury it in the back of the net to take the lead at 3-2. LCA closed out the last few minutes of the game behind a defense sparked by Andrew Wengryn’s physicality and Carter Smith’s usual solid goalkeeping. The injury depleted Lions literally used everyone available, contributing the best they had to offer, to earn this victory in true team fashion.
