After coming off a tough hard fought loss on Tuesday to Monsignor Donovan, the Lady Lions opened the Inaugural Bevans Invitational Tournament verses Lanier Christian. It was a well balanced contest and like on Tuesday the Lady Lions out shot and out possessed their opponent. Unfortunately, a loose ball in the box and a failed attempt to clear resulted in Lanier’s only goal and significant attempt. A good old fashioned smash and grab victory for Lanier. Lady Lions 0, Lanier Christian 1.
In the afternoon match up The Lady Lions faced off verses Lafayette Academy.
Another balanced contest until midway through the first half when Reese Waters was taken down in the box by the Lafayette goalkeeper. This resulted in penalty kick for the Lady Lions. Stepping up and converting the penalty was Katherine Owens. Her penalty was taken with extreme confidence. It brought an end to the 130 minute scoreless streak.
Not but 10 minutes later Lafayette was awarded a penalty on a questionable call against one of our Lady Lions defenders. The starting goalkeeper, Halle VandenOever, made a very athletic attempt to produce a great save but unfortunately the ball spun off her gloves into the near corner.
As the game became more intense with either side wanting to end their day with a loss the physicality and determination began to show. With 10 minutes left in the second half Maddie Wilson with her first start showed great poise and confidence. She received the ball about 32 yards from goal and proceeded to put the Lafayette defense under immediate pressure. She dribbled into the box beating two Lafayette defenders and slotting the ball in the near post for the winner.
The Lady Lions next contest is Tuesday on the road at Briarwood.
