The Loganville Christian Lions rolled over high school football region opponents Notre Dame Academy Irish Wolfhounds on Friday night, 54-0.
The Lions reached the end zone three times in the first half and five times in the second. The defense forced five turnovers over the course of the game.
The first score came when senior quarterback Cole Pace found Nicholas Ruder over the middle from 15 yards out to score, finishing out a drive that started on the Irish 40-yard line. The kick from Carter Smith made it 7-0 with 7 minutes, 8 seconds left in the first quarter.
The next Lion scoring drive started on the 38-yard line. Runs from Deedee Brown and Jordan Jackson and receptions from Clayton Smith and Brent Taylor took the Lions to the red zone.
Pace then found Jackson with a pass to the right side of the field. Jackson shrugged off an arm tackle and found paydirt. The kick made it LCA 14, Notre Dame 0 with 9:52 left in the second.
The Lions offense started with excellent field position on its next drive thanks to the defense. Jamal Price skied to pick off a deep Irish pass on his own 25-yard line. He kept his footing and raced back to the Notre Dame 42 before being pushed out of bounds.
Two minutes later, the Lions found the end zone through Lajalan Stephens, who pushed the ball over the line from the 1-yard line. That made it 21-0 after Smith’s kick.
Notre Dame got one more drive in the first half but Hunter Hampton, who grabbed an interception as time expired, snuffed it out.
The Irish got the ball back to start the half, but the Lion defense took it away again on their second play from scrimmage, when Stephens fell on a fumble.
That gave the offense the ball on the 21-yard line. Pace found Clayton Smith with a pass in the flat, who ran it down to the 5. On the next play, Price grabbed the handoff a raced around the end to score. The kick made it LCA 28, Notre Dame 0 with 11:22 left in the third quarter.
After more good defense, the Lions got the ball back on the Irish 28-yard line. Three plays later, Gavin Sharp powered his way into the end zone, to make it 35-0 to the Lions with 5:06 left in the third quarter.
The Lions kept pouring it on. Brown grabbed a fumble on the next Irish drive to give LCA the ball on deep in Irish territory. Noah Moore raced around the end two plays later to score. The extra point try failed, so the score stayed at 41-0.
Ruder got in on the turnover act on the next Irish drive, grabbing yet another fumble for the Lion defense. The other Ruder on the Lions squad, freshman Joshua Ruder, powered the ball over the line from 1 yard out to finish the ensuing drive. That made it 47-0 after the kick missed on a bad snap with 7:02 left in the fourth quarter.
On the next Lion possession, Price got his second touchdown of the night, racing past the Irish defense to score from 49 yards out. The kick was good to make it 54-0 with 3:20 left in the contest, where the game finished.
The victory moves the Lions to 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in their region. They travel to Hahira next week to take on Valwood.
